For domain analysis and requirements engineering for the tool, a formal organisation dynamics modelling approach was adopted. We present the APPROACH tool demonstrating the added value of automation of rotation planning over traditional planning. The development trajectory of the tool demonstrates the benefits of the used formal modelling approach in a practical realworld setting, resulting in a concrete software tool that can be put into work in the harbour. Preliminary analysis indicates that execution times of barge rotation in the harbour decreases when the tool is used.

Using service-time profiles for distributed planning of container barge rotations along terminals

We consider the barge rotation planning and quay scheduling problem in the Port of Rotterdam. This problem concerns the alignment of barge rotations and terminal quay schedules. We use a Multi-Agent based approach for the problem, since such a Multi-Agent based system can mirror to a large extent the way the business network is currently organized. Moreover, it can provide a solution that is ac...

Barge rotation planning and quay scheduling in the port of Rotterdam

We consider the problem how to align barge rotations with quay schedules of terminals in the port of Rotterdam. Every time a barge visits the port, it has to make a rotation along, on average, eight terminals to load and unload containers. A central solution, e.g., a trusted party that coordinates the activities of all barges and terminals, is not feasible for several reasons. One of the reason...

Column Generation for the Container Relocation Problem

Container terminals offer transfer facilities to move containers from vessels to trucks, trains and barges and vice versa. Within the terminal the container yard serves as a temporary buffer where incoming containers are piled up in stacks. Only the topmost container of each stack can be accessed. If another container has to be retrieved, containers stored above it must be relocated first. Cont...

Aligning the operations of barges and terminals through distributed planning

Our findings are promising. Our interaction protocol supports an efficient negotiation between barge and terminal operators. Our MAS allows for real-time alignment of barge and terminal operations such that the overall system performance is well within the range of central planning performance. Moreover, our MAS suppresses the propagation of disruptions, making the operations of barges and term...
